Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate
Cleft Lip and Cleft palate are openings in the upper lip or roof of the mouth (palate) that do not close completely during the facial formation of an unborn baby. One of the most common birth defects it is associated with many inherited genetic conditions but can commonly occur as an isolated defect.
Although having a child born with clefts may be upsetting to most parents, they can be corrected. Most babies undergo a series of surgeries that can restore both normal function and appearance with very minimal scarring.
